Appendix A: Sample Calculations

Data Collected:

Tree No. 100

dbh = 0.81m

Total Ht. = 17 m

Tim. Ht. 2.0m

Mean Total Ht. for all Roadside Trees is 11.10m

Calculations:

Tree B/A

= (dbh)2 / 2

= (0.81)2 / 2

0.51m2

Timber Volume

= B/A x Tim. Ht.

= 0.52 m2 x 2.0m

= 1.03m3

Total Volume

= 0.59 (Mean Total Ht. x B/A)

= 0.59 (11.10m x 0.52m2

= 3.41m

Branchwood Vol.

= Total Vol. - Timber Vol.

= 3.41m3 - 1.03m3

= 2.38m3

% Branchwood Vol.

= (2.38 / 3.41) x 100

= 70%

Note: All calculations were carried out using a statistical package on a computer to a greater degree of accuracy than that implied in the above calculations. The final results shown are those obtained from the computer.

Appendix B: A.N.O.V.A. Tables

Analysis of Variance

The following tests were carried out to find if there were any differences in dbh, total height and total volume between the trees in transects 2 - 6.

Hypothesis:

H0: 2 = 3 = 4 = 5 = 6

H1: 2 3 4 5 6

Critical Region:

F > F (5,509) at 5% level of significance.

F > 2.21 (For all 3 tests).

Action reject H0 at the 5% level of significance

Test (1): DBH

F = 6.99 (Table 27)

6.99 > 2.21

Action reject H0 at the 5% level of significance

Test (2): Total Height

F = 15.06 (Table 28)

15.06 > 2.21

Action reject H0 at the 5% level of significance

Test (3): Total Volume

F = 18.22 (Table 29)

18.22 > 2.21

Action reject H0 at the 5% level of significance

Conclusion for tests 1 - 3: There are significant differences in dbh, total height and total volume between the 5 transects. Scheff's test was carried out on the same data in order to identify where the differences lay (see Section 4.3)
